Summer Institute

On July 7th, we are kicking off a new phase of the All Access program . . . Introducing the Summer Institute. We have graphic design, creative writing/theater, and hip hop dancing offered as intensive workshops that take place over the course of a week in conjunction with summer-long ongoing programs. Click the image above to find out more and register.
Design fresh posters from the ground up. Take posters from a 5 minute sketch to something that makes eyeballs explode! Some posters will be more dangerous than others, so bring sunglasses with UV protection. We'll learn to use Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and a pen to create something that makes a person think, "Hey, this piece of paper looks cool . . . I wonder what it's about?" You don't need to know much about computers or programs to take this class. Just bring yourself ready to hang out and make cool things.

FEEST is the Food Education Empowerment and Sustainability Team. We are a youth-run program out of Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, and we gather every Wednesday at 3:30 PM to kick it in the kitchen, prepare a delicious and healthy meal, and then eat all together family-style while learning more about food in our communities. At the end of every month, we throw Community Potlucks where people of all ages are invited to share and dialogue with us. Our blog entries are written by FEEST leaders and feature photography by the wonderful youth and staff.

Seeds of Movement is a summer intensive and year-long internship program that bridges the Healthy Corner Stores Project and FEEST. Throughout the summer, four youth interns will receive media literacy training with Youth Out Loud as well as engage with the soil to plate process through making site visits to local corner stores, farms, and markets. They will then combine these skills and learning to implement year-long projects and media campaigns on food justice issues which will be presented at the 2011 Youth Summit.
Seeds of movement is closed - we've already chosen our four interns.

The Youth Out Loud summer program is an intensive training that exposes young people to a variety of media and communication issues and technologies. The youth cover complex themes, such as media democracy and media justice, which offer participants perspective about why their voices are so important. They also develop technical skills in the various forms of media studied—including graphic design and Photoshop; camera techniques and video editing software; audio recording and editing, and technologies in community media, including radio and television.
